The candidates with the lowest levels of remuneration are typically the ones who have been with their current employer for more than 5 years. There are 2 main reasons. 1) Internal incremental pay raises are never as big as the raise you get when you change employer 2) most people don't know how to secure an acceptable raise. When you change employer, it's important to be able to confidently negotiate a package that is not just acceptable today, but that you'll be happy with in the future. If you're staying where you are, you need to be happy that your contribution is valued. Understanding the value you bring to an employer is crucial in making sure that you get the compensation you deserve for your services. But negotiations can be tough and for many people, they just don't know how to go about discussing an offer with the employer.
